An abstract from RECORD bearing date 1820 carrying the Branch from Hon. John Alden-1597, through Joseph - John - Eliab Jr. and Oramel

The following incident from the historical literature of the time having a interesting value and  bearing to the Family  in America, is included in this Record.

The Hon. John Alden was one of the Pilgrims of Leyden who came to Plymouth in 1620.  He was then about 22 years of age and was one of those who signed the original contract formed and adopted by the first adventurers at Cape Cod Harbor on the 15th of November. He was the stripling who first leaped upon the rock as mentioned by President Adams in a certain communication.

He was an inmate in the family of  Captain Miles Standish who having lost his wife and desirous of marrying Miss Priscilla Mullins, a daughter of Mr. Wim. Mullins, according to the custom of those times, he requested John Alden to ask Mr. Mullins for permission to visit his daughter for that purpose.

The old gentleman said that it was perfectly agreeable to him but the young lady must also be consulted.  Whereupon she was called into the room, and John Alden who is said to have been a man of most excellent form with a fair and ruddy complexion, arose and in a very courteous and prepossessing manner delivered his errand. Miss Mullins, listened with respectful attention, and at last, after a considerable pause, fixing her eyes upon him with an open and pleasant countenance said, “Prithee John, why do you not speak for yourself?”.  He blushed and bowed and took his leave, but with a look that indicated more than his diffidence would permit him otherwise to express.

However, he soon renewed his visit and it was not long before their nuptials were celebrated in simple form. From them are descended all of the name Alden in the United States.   The aforesaid John Alden was born in some part of Great Britain in 1597. He was for many years a Magistrate in Plymouth Colony, settled and died in Duxborough.  He was distinguished by his holy life and conversation.  He was meek, humble, sincere, pious and faithful follower of the Blessed Redeemer. And ended his useful life on the 12th of September, 1687, aged 90 years.
